# The Ausbund: prison songs and congregational memory

1535–1540 songs; 1564 collection · Overview

The Ausbund grew from hymns written by imprisoned believers. The supplied overview dates the core prison songs to 1535–1540 and the earliest printed collection it describes to 1564.

The songs carried confession, suffering, and hope into congregational worship. The overview notes their oral transmission without printed musical notation and their continued use among Amish congregations. Hans Haslibacher’s witness provides another link between a remembered martyr and the song tradition.
