# Bernhard Warkentin, Philip Wiebe, and the land scouts

1872 · Overview

As Mennonites in the Russian Empire became concerned about threats to their privileges, they looked west for possible new homes. In 1872 Bernhard Warkentin and Philip Wiebe traveled to North America to examine land. The exhibit names Kansas, Texas, Minnesota, the Dakota region, and Manitoba among the places they investigated.

They sent letters back to Russia describing their findings. This correspondence helped families consider migration before committing to an ocean crossing and a new settlement. The scouts’ work connects the later mass movement to identifiable people, routes, and practical decisions rather than depicting migration as an unexplained arrow between continents.
