# Worship behind the street front in Holland

1700–1800 · Overview

The exhibit describes Dutch Mennonite meeting places in the eighteenth century as hidden behind the façades of commercial buildings. Permission to gather did not necessarily include permission to make the congregation publicly conspicuous. The street frontage therefore concealed spaces in which believers could assemble for worship.

Inside, the meeting places could be well furnished, and the panel records the use of organs in many congregations after the middle of the century. This episode provides a concrete view of changing Dutch church life: the limits imposed by public authorities, the arrangements made to continue worship, and developments in congregational practice over time. It belongs alongside the separate Waterlander, Flemish, Frisian, Lamb, and Sun histories on the branch chart.
