# Mennonite migration to Germantown

1683 · Overview

The Concord reached Philadelphia on 6 October 1683 after a ten-week Atlantic voyage. On board were thirteen Mennonite-Quaker families from Krefeld. They settled in the Germantown area, beginning an important chapter of congregational and family life in Pennsylvania. The exhibit places their journey after the invitations associated with William Penn and George Fox.

The movement was followed by the work of establishing homes, trades, ministry, and places of worship. William Rittenhouse’s papermaking and pastoral work and the first log meetinghouse in 1708 show what settlement involved beyond the arrival of a ship. Later Swiss and German migration enlarged this North American history.
