# A meetinghouse at Germantown

1708; stone replacement in 1770 · Overview

The first Mennonite meetinghouse at Germantown was a log structure erected in 1708. The congregation grew in a settlement shaped by migration from Krefeld and other European communities. A permanent place of assembly supported the shared worship and church life that believers had sought freedom to practice in Pennsylvania.

In 1770 the log structure was replaced by a stone building. The exhibit follows its use into the twentieth century and remembers the congregation’s continuing life. The two dates mark distinct stages: 1708 is the beginning of the meetinghouse, while 1770 belongs to the surviving stone structure. They are not competing dates for the same building.
