# Halstead Seminary and the path to Bethel College 1882 origins; Halstead 1883–1893 · Overview Halstead Seminary grew from an educational initiative begun at Emmatal in 1882 among Mennonite settlers in central Kansas. The school moved to Halstead in 1883 under the Kansas Conference, using a building provided by the Halstead College Association. Its dedication on September 16 brought together church leaders and supporters of Christian education. Heinrich H. Ewert and Peter J. Galle taught students preparing for community leadership, teaching, and church service. Despite its name, the institution resembled a preparatory school or Bible institute more than a modern graduate seminary. Financial pressures and debate over location eventually shifted support toward Newton. Halstead’s work ended in 1893, when Bethel College opened as its successor. This connection explains the educational sequence on the chart without treating Halstead and Bethel as simply one unchanged school with a new name.
