# Hutterite communities move north 1918 · Overview The Hutterite move north during the First World War was a migration of communities seeking room to continue their life of faith. German speech, refusal to participate in war, and resistance to financing it made colonies targets of hostility. The photographed timeline describes open harassment of settlements in the United States during this period. At Jamesville Colony in South Dakota, refusal to sell war bonds was followed by a raid that cost the community livestock valued in the panel at about $40,000. The imprisonment of the Hofer brothers and Jacob Wipf placed the consequences of nonresistance before other families as well. A colony’s ability to live by its convictions could no longer be taken for granted. Many colonies prepared to leave the United States, and a substantial movement into Canada followed in 1918. Hutterite community history records settlements in Manitoba and Alberta among the different Leut. The move extended the long history of Hutterite migration in search of religious freedom, carrying communal worship, shared work, and common life into new prairie homes. - [Supplied timeline photograph IMG_9366, captions H, E](https://github.com/trueChristian/history.truechristian.church/blob/main/sources/church-history/photos/IMG_9366.jpg) - [Hutterian Brethren: World War I and migration to Canada](https://hutterites.org/history/world-war-1/) --- Page: https://history.truechristian.church/en/events/hutterites-to-canada-1918/ [Contribute a correction or addition](https://github.com/trueChristian/history.truechristian.church/issues/new?title=Correction%3A+Hutterite+communities+move+north&body=%23%23+Page+or+topic%0AHutterite+communities+move+north%0A%0APage%3A+https%3A%2F%2Fhistory.truechristian.church%2Fen%2Fevents%2Fhutterites-to-canada-1918%2F%0A%0ARecord%3A+hutterites-to-canada-1918%0A%0ADate+currently+shown%3A+1918%0A%0A%23%23+Correction+or+addition%0A%0A%0A%0A%23%23+Sources+and+evidence%0APlease+include+book%2Fpage+references%2C+archive+links%2C+or+first-hand+documentation.%0A%0A%0A%0A%23%23+Image+credit+%28if+applicable%29%0ACreator%2C+source%2C+and+permission+or+public-domain+basis.%0A%0A%0A%0ASubmitted+for+review%3B+this+issue+does+not+publish+changes+automatically.)
