# The Masontown meetings of 1872

1872 · Overview

In 1872 Daniel Brenneman, assisted by John F. Funk, held revival meetings at Masontown, Pennsylvania. Mennonite histories identify these as the first such series within the Mennonite Church body commonly abbreviated MC. This is a claim about that particular revival-meeting form and church setting, not about the beginning of Anabaptist evangelism.

A series of meetings extended preaching and invitation beyond the usual congregational service. Advocates hoped to awaken faith and call hearers to conversion and renewed Christian life. Other Mennonites questioned the new methods, contributing to the wider nineteenth-century discussion of worship, discipline, and innovations.

Later evangelists, including John S. Coffman, carried the revival emphasis into further congregations. The Masontown marker is therefore linked here with the stories of Funk and the regional Old Order divisions, while each development retains its own dates and causes.
