# Mennonite relief cooperation: MCC

1920 · Overview

Hunger in Ukraine brought leaders from different North American Mennonite churches together at Elkhart, Indiana, on 27 July 1920. Thirteen leaders discussed how the churches could respond. The first official meeting of Mennonite Central Committee followed on 27 September. Its name expressed the decision to coordinate aid through one central body.

The exhibit places this organization in the aftermath of revolution, violence, and famine. Congregations sent help, and workers carried relief toward the affected communities. Clayton Kratz was among those who went and did not return. The story of MCC’s beginning therefore includes both cooperation across church lines and the personal cost of serving people in danger.
