# Mennonite Brethren Bible College and Concord College

1944–2000; Concord College from 1992 · Overview

The Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches established Mennonite Brethren Bible College in Winnipeg in 1944 to offer advanced preparation for Christian service. Early programs trained pastors, Bible and Sunday-school teachers, missionaries, and church musicians. Biblical and theological instruction developed alongside a broader range of academic subjects. The school’s relationship with the University of Winnipeg strengthened over time, while supporting churches debated the balance between ministry training and university-level education.

Withdrawal of national support brought a major reorganization in 1992, when Concord College emerged with a changed governing structure and educational program. Concord subsequently joined Canadian Mennonite Bible College and Menno Simons College in Canadian Mennonite University, which opened in 2000. This sequence concerns the Bible college and its successor. Winnipeg’s Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute, a secondary school founded in 1945, is a different institution and should not be substituted merely because its name is similar.
