# Swift Current Bible Institute and western Canadian church service

1936–1996 · Overview

Swift Current Bible Institute was founded in Saskatchewan in 1936 through N. Banmann and supporters within the Conference of Mennonites in Canada. Its winter sessions prepared Sunday-school teachers, youth workers, singers, and choir conductors. Biblical study was joined to Mennonite history and missions. This General Conference institution must be distinguished from the separate Swift Current Mennonite Brethren Bible School, which also began in 1936.

The institute’s regional role grew as smaller schools closed. Students from the former Rosthern Bible School were directed toward Swift Current after 1961, and Menno Bible Institute at Didsbury amalgamated with it in 1966. Saskatchewan and Alberta Mennonite conferences subsequently shared responsibility for the governing board. Planning for a larger campus began in 1980, but enrollment later declined. An attempted reorganization as the Marpeck School of Discipleship did not succeed, and the institute closed in 1996. Archival evidence supplies these dates independently of the chart’s indistinct year.
