# Abraham and Miriam Friesen: mission to India

Mission began in 1890 · Overview

Abraham and Miriam Friesen are named in the exhibit as the first Mennonite missionaries to India, sent in 1890 by the Mennonite Brethren in Russia. Because their sending churches did not yet have an organized mission agency, they served through the American Baptist Missionary Society.

Other Mennonite mission programs from the United States sent workers in 1899–1900. The panel follows these beginnings toward later Mennonite and Brethren in Christ congregations in India. Its numerical totals describe the exhibit’s own period and are not reused as current statistics. The Friesens’ story records an identifiable beginning and the cooperation through which the early work became possible.
