# Johannes Erigena

c. 884 · Overview

Johannes Erigena, also called Scotus in the source, is remembered for learning, translation, and teaching concerning the Lord’s Supper. Martyrs’ Mirror describes his opposition to transubstantiation and connects his writings with the later convictions of Berengarius.

The principal heading places his death at Meldum in England about 884. A following section explicitly compares the dates 869 and 884 and explains how the author relates the earlier date to his teaching and the later to his death. Keeping those sections together preserves the book’s own treatment of the chronology.
