# Obbe Philips and the early Dutch brotherhood

Born c. 1500; died 1568 · Overview

Obbe Philips, a barber-surgeon from Leeuwarden, became involved with Melchior Hoffman’s followers and was baptized in December 1533. He traveled among Dutch believers and took part in appointing leaders, including his brother Dirk, David Joris, and later Menno Simons. The supplied chart preserves his name as a separate early line beside the Mennonite movement.

After the crisis at Münster, Obbe’s followers became associated with a rejection of armed religious action. Obbe himself later doubted the validity of his calling and the ordinations he had performed. He withdrew from the movement around 1539–1540 and described that crisis in his later Confession. The exhibit’s “Departures” caption records this separation. His earlier work and his departure are both part of the history; the record does not turn the end of his ministry into an unnamed break on the chart.
