# Pilgram Marpeck and the South German fellowship

Documented leadership 1525–1556 · Overview

Pilgram Marpeck came from Rattenberg in the Tyrol and served in civic offices and mining administration. As mining magistrate he faced demands to hand over workers sympathetic to Anabaptist preaching. His later life and writings belonged to the South German movement, and the supplied exhibit identifies him among its leading teachers.

Marpeck helped sustain a fellowship through correspondence and theological writing. Leupold Scharnschlager became a close associate, sharing in the explanation of baptism, Christian life, and the church. Their writings show that dispersed congregations were connected by counsel and study as well as by travel. Marpeck died in 1556. The chart’s spelling “Pilgrim Marpeck” is retained as a searchable alternative to the documented name Pilgram.
