# Old Order Amish

Later nineteenth century · Overview

The Amish tradition began with the late-seventeenth-century division associated with Jakob Ammann. Old Order Amish is a later designation that became prominent during nineteenth-century differences over proposed changes and ministerial conference cooperation.

The exhibit places Old Order Amish alongside Egly Amish, Amish Mennonite conferences, and later Beachy fellowships. These separate lines help explain why Amish is a family of histories rather than one organizational body. Local congregations establish their own rules, and particular practices differ among affiliations.
