Hutterite communities under coercion in 1761

Arrest and compulsory religious instruction disrupted Hutterite communal life in Austria and Hungary.

Also searchable as: Austria · Hungary

The exhibit marks 1761 as a severe crisis for Hutterite communities in Austria and Hungary. It recounts arrests involving Jesuit authorities, compulsory attendance at Catholic services, and the detention of leaders in monasteries for instruction. The community remembered by the panel had been reduced to only a few dozen survivors.

Communal living was also abandoned under this pressure. The panel connects this loss to its later restoration in Russian settlements. The episode helps explain why the Hutterite timeline is a sequence of refuge, disruption, renewed shared life, and further migration rather than a stationary institution. Its witness remained bound to the conviction that disciples should share their life and possessions.
