Jacob Hochstetler and the test of nonresistance

The Hochstetler family’s ordeal at Northkill became a remembered test of refusing violence in the face of danger.

Also searchable as: Jacob Hochstetler · Hochstetler family

In September 1757, during the French and Indian War, the Jacob Hochstetler family awoke to an attack at their cabin at Northkill in northern Berks County, Pennsylvania. The sons wanted to defend the household with guns. The exhibit recounts that Jacob reminded them of Christ’s teaching and would not permit violent self-defense.

Three family members were killed; Jacob and two sons were taken prisoner. The account is remembered because nonresistance was tested at the point of immediate danger and terrible personal loss. The panel does not name the other family members or give a full account of their captivity, so those details remain outside this summary rather than being filled in from the painting.
