Jakob Ammann was a Swiss Anabaptist leader concerned with spiritual renewal, separation from the world, and the practice of church discipline. Disagreement over the ban and shunning contributed to the division of 1693, and his followers came to be called Amish.
The Amish branch page follows the later development of those communities, including migrations and the emergence of distinct fellowships. The 1693 date marks Ammann’s place in that wider history, while the later branches retain their own dates and accounts.
