Stephen, Waldensian elder at Vienna
Stephen was an elder of the Waldenses who had sought refuge in Austria amid persecution in and around Bohemia. Martyrs’ Mirror recounts his arrest at Vienna and his refusal to abandon either his faith or the people entrusted to his care.
The account places his death by burning about 1471. It links the suffering of a named shepherd with the movement and dispersal of Waldensian believers late in the fifteenth century, immediately before the book turns to the sixteenth-century witnesses.
