Chortitzer Mennonites
The Bergthal migration to Manitoba’s East Reserve in 1874–1876 established the Chortitzer church history.
Chortitzer congregational history in Manitoba grew from the arrival of Bergthal Mennonites in 1874–1876. The Mennonite Heritage Archives holds church registers, correspondence, financial records, and materials concerning the Waisenamt, the community’s estate and guardianship administration.
Further migrations and changing relationships with West Reserve congregations form part of this history. In 1926–1927, members of the Chortitzer and Sommerfeld churches helped establish the Menno colony in Paraguay. The source chart shows these movements within the wider colony-based family. The name also belongs to a continuing church history later known as Christian Mennonite Conference.
