Schwarzenau Brethren

The Schwarzenau Brethren represent a related movement shaped by Anabaptism and Pietism, beginning with the baptisms at the Eder River in 1708.

Alexander Mack was influenced by both Pietism and Anabaptism. Eight believers gathered for baptism in August 1708. Migration to Pennsylvania began in 1719, and a congregation formed at Germantown in 1723. Later divisions produced several Brethren bodies; the Church of the Brethren adopted that name in 1908.
