Soviet Mennonites: Kirchliche and Brethren
The chart follows Mennonite and Mennonite Brethren communities through revolution, war, repression, and migration in the Soviet period.
The exhibit uses USSR “Kirchliche” and Mennonite Brethren for communities continuing in the Soviet Union. Kirchliche distinguished congregational Mennonites from the Brethren movement; the label is not a new denomination founded in 1917.
The timeline records the Russian Revolution, migrations during the 1920s, wartime displacement, and continuing believers under Soviet rule. This page covers the historical period 1917–1991. Family and church records need to be read within those changing political conditions, with the different congregational traditions kept visible.
