Allianz fellowship in Molotschna

Bible courses and open fellowship on Mennonite estates contributed to the Allianz-related church organized in 1905.

Also searchable as: Allianz-Gemeinde · Evangelische Mennonitische Brüderschaft · Evangelische Mennoniten Gemeinden

At the end of the nineteenth century, Mennonites from southern Russia attended evangelical gatherings at Blankenburg in Germany. Peter P. Schmidt and David J. Dick brought these contacts into the Molotschna setting by sponsoring Bible courses on their estates. Mennonite Brethren and other Mennonite teachers, ministers, and families met for study, preaching, and fellowship.

The gatherings continued into the next decade and included celebrations of communion among believers from different church backgrounds. In 1905 an Allianz-oriented group organized as the Evangelische Mennonitische Brüderschaft, also known as Evangelische Mennoniten Gemeinden. The name described this particular movement in Ukraine rather than every organization later abbreviated EMB.

Peter Schmidt’s notebooks and the families’ guest registers preserve dates of meetings, visiting speakers, and personal reflections. Their archival record gives the chart’s brief 1905 marker a setting in households, Scripture study, and the movement of people between European evangelical circles and Mennonite congregations.
