1569: Dirk Willems’s witness · place

Asperen

Asperen in Holland is the setting of Dirk Willems’s imprisonment, flight across the ice, rescue of his pursuer, and recapture. Martyrs’ Mirror gives the local setting as part of the account of his faith and suffering.

The same source preserves a copy of the town’s sentence dated 16 May 1569 and identifies its later extraction from the records of Asperen. The place therefore links the remembered rescue with a specific court record.
