The timeline’s Cornies is Johann Cornies (1789–1848), a leader in the Mennonite settlements of the Russian Empire. His family moved from the Danzig region in 1804, spent time at Chortitza, and then settled in the Molotschna colony. Farming and trade gave him the means to undertake wider agricultural projects.
By 1817 he had been appointed chairman of a society promoting tree planting, horticulture, silk production, and vine growing, later known as an agricultural association. His work included livestock breeding, crop experiments, irrigation, and nurseries that supplied trees to the settlements. These activities help explain the chart’s agricultural-improvement marker.
His influence reached beyond an individual farm into the organization of colonial life, backed by government authority. The Mennonite Archives of Ontario preserves a Cornies fonds concerning the later division of his estate. Its records and the biographical history connect the name on the chart to a documented person, community, and body of surviving evidence.
